The River of Shining Jaguars

For an hour, the jaguar skulked, making miniscule
moves as the guests became mannequins,
Then hyperboles, then exaggerations, then
Superlatives at the thrashing water’s annihilation.

In 2011, during my first sabbatical from the university, I made my first trip to the Pantanal after spending a couple of weeks in the Amazon. It was, to put it bluntly, the most productive wildlife trip of my life. And I was hooked on the sheer volume of animals to photograph. I returned again and again.

Eventually, by the time 2018 rolled around, I decided it was time to do a book on the Northern Pantanal jaguar and since I was self-sufficient when it came to navigating the region, I went on my own with a boatman. We found endless jaguars doing every conceivable behavior: hunting, feeding, grooming, and mating.

Photographing in the Pantanal is mostly by boat (especially if you are specializing in jaguars) so a great tripod and a large telephoto are key, as well as extra batteries and memory cards. If jaguars are hunting, you will want to make sure you have a very fast shutter speed.
